On my speaker processor I ball parked the overall EQ of the mains and monitors by setting the system up outside and hooking up a noise generator and an RTA mic. They can be instrumental in protecting your equipment if needed and limiting how much gets into your speakers. I’ve installed driveracks in clubs and bars with small house PA systems where the bands and djs show up and plug in. I like to keep my signal chain as short as possible and in most cases using a small powered system the driverack is probably overkill. That’s a passive rig and the driverack handled all processing. One of the best systems I’ve ever heard was a small eaw rig with jf29 for mains running a driverack 260. Yanked the drive rack and the systems came to life. I have worked with bands in setting up systems and heard some systems really sound choked with the driverack incorporated (mainly self powered). I feel with modern powered speakers and the technology available in digital mixers, the driverack setup is overkill and often a tone suck on small scale powered, PA systems.

We ran 2 JBL PRX715's out of a Mackie ProFx 22 mixer and we'd sometimes use a KW181 sub depending on the size of the venue. Sorry I can't help on whether or not the delay function helped overcome the backline delay issue, which is a new one to me. We just knew that it was a no-brainer getting our PA to sound great with it, and a royal pain to set up a room without it.

All that said, if I recall, the delays are programmed in as part of the RTA process, so again, we didn't need to know much about it. None of us knew much about PA's and that's why we got that box to begin with. Never any feedback (even with subs which we always struggled with before the dbx) either. I don't own one but I played in a band that used one and after "pinking" the room with the RTA mic, the sound was always spot on, clear and warm. I guess I'll chime in with my experience to get you the thread bump, but honestly, from your question I can surmise that you're way ahead of me on this stuff.
